Aloha and welcome to the Danzan ‘Ryu’nion 2026, the National Convention gathering for the AJJF in San Francisco. This year we celebrate the Hawaiian concept of Kuleana. Part of what makes our community unique and outstanding is that natural ability to care for one another, going out of the way to help others grow and develop. Kuleana is a privilege to take the abilities or knowledge that you have and reapply it to those who have given to you, becoming your responsibility. A “few burdens are heavy if everyone lifts” concept developed on one of the most isolated archipelagos on the planet.
To signify this we celebrate the visual aspects of the ‘ohe kapala or bamboo stamp. A simple tool used to decorate traditional tapa cloth and build more complex patterns off of basic design. Sounds like karate hazushi ichi and ni correct? Together patterns emerge that may look Hawaiian, they may look Japanese, they may look blended, much like our art Danzan Ryu Jujitsu.
