When I first think of martial arts, I think of the Karate Kid doing “Wax on, wax off.”
One day, I was taking the Metro train when, all of a sudden, the door opened and someone got kicked right into my pathway. I “opened the door” and moved out of the way to keep from getting hurt. That was one of the lessons that I learned in martial arts. It is similar to a form of Sumo, which is Japan’s national sport. “Wax on, wax off” and “Open the door” are just two techniques learned in martial arts.
In reality, martial arts is more than fighting. It builds character, confidence, and discipline.
I use martial arts every day because it is now instinct. There is so much to learn. In my experience, I am learning a lot:
-
In learning character, martial arts taught me empathy as I help teach the little kids’ classes. Also, I am still learning how to be respectful to my parents, which will shape my character in the future when dealing with authority.
-
In learning confidence, I am learning how to make friends.
-
In discipline, I am learning to do hard things and not give up.
In conclusion, continued practice in martial arts will help with skills like character, confidence, and discipline. These are skills that I am still learning as I continue to put them into practice.
