Before You Publish Your Site

Each web search engines has a little bit different way of classifying and indexing your site into their database. We strongly suggest that you include KEYWORDS and DESCRIPTION meta tags in your homepage. These are use to classify and the DESCRIPTION is displayed when a user hits your page with a search.

Here are two examples of the HTML code used for these meta tags. First the AJJF Homepage:

<META name="description" content="The AJJF promotes DanZan Ryu Jujitsu, an effective system of self-defense that incorporates physical and mental training within a philosophy of ethical and moral development.">
<META name="keywords" content="AJJF, jujitsu, jujutsu, judo, ju-jitsu, jui-jitsu, martial arts, massage, Okazaki, grappling, self-defense, Danzan Ryu, DZR">
<META name="distribution" content="global">
Second a dojo homepage, Kodai No Bushido. Note that the city and state are included in the keywords, it is not a "global" distribution like the AJJF should be.
<META name="description" content="Kodai No Bushido educates and trains individuals to improve their physical & mental abilities via Danzan-Ryu Jujitsu, martial arts, and physical culture.">
<META name="keywords" content="AJJF, jujitsu, jujutsu, judo, martial arts, massage, Okazaki, Kodai No Bushido, Ternion Academy, Ternion, grappling, self-defense, Danzan-Ryu, DanzanRyu, Danzan, DZR, qigong, chi kong, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, San Jose, Campbell, R.A.D. Systems, RAD Systems, Rape Aggression Defense, rape defense, books, videos">
Keywords should include alternate spelling (even misspelling in some kases) as well as general terms people unfamiliar with your style might use in searching for your dojo. Including nearby towns will not hurt either.

Page TITLE is the text that appears in the window banner at the top of the web browser when a page is displayed. This should describe the page contents in a concise yet general way (less than 60 characters). It is the TITLE that shows up in peoples bookmarks. Some search engines give more weight to the TITLE words that the words found in the body of the page. The title code for this page looks like this and belongs in the HEAD section along with the meta lines above.

Optimize to Get the Most from Search Engines

One of the most cost-effective ways to drive traffic to your Web site is to optimize it for search engines. Many of them use automated programs called "crawlers" or "spiders" to create an index of the Web, which they use to determine what sites are most relevant to users' queries. These programs essentially visit Web sites, read the pages' content, and follow any links to other pages, repeating the process on the sites where they end up. By also retrieving information on link destinations and frequency, among other things, the search engines are able to better "understand" Web sites than if they only took site text into account. Therefore, the key to better placement in search results is making sure it is easy for crawlers to gather useful information about your site. Search engines particularly take into account the location and frequency of keywords on your pages in determining your site's relevance. Here are some specific things you can do to optimize your Web site:

Search Engine Instructions

This page describes how the AJJF Home Page and dojos pages are posted to web search engines.

When the web was first starting each webmaster needed to submit their site to each search engine. Currently (1999) all the search engines have powerful spiders that crawl the web (and other search engine trees) to locate new sites. They also verify the existence of old sites. So we no longer need to be pro-active to get the AJJF site listed. If fact, every time a new engine comes on line I check for the AJJF and we are already there.

The AJJF site is listed all over because that are many other sites that point to the AJJF page. Your dojo page will not fall into this category so you will have to tell the world (the search engines) who you are and where to find you.

Submit-It is a site submission service that will notify the primary search engines of your website. I used it before they started charging, if your pay for the service let me know how good and effective it is. http://www.submit-it.com/

The ISP that we use to host the AJJF site provides this form to submit your URLs.

Other Places to List Your Site

In addition to the general search engines that are a few other places we have found that are worth placing your ad. The following information is informational only, do not consider it a recommendation or anything else (no warrantly either expressed or denied).
