Athletic Taping Examination Requirements

Description

Candidates for Blackbelt examinations will be required to demonstrate the basic knowledge and skills necessary to tape all major joints of the body. In broad terms, this means that the examinee must be able to do specific taping techniques and also explain the circumstances in which the taping techniques would be appropriate.

Candidates for Blackbelt examinations will further be required to successfully pass a written exam on Trauma Management and Athletic Taping.

Further Information

To successfully complete the examination, the candidate will need to demonstrate three levels of competency:
  1. Describe the circumstances when taping would be appropriate.
  2. Describe the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones affected by the injury.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to tape one of five major joints.
    1. shoulder
    2. elbow
    3. wrist
    4. knee
    5. ankle
Evidence of competency for the above shall consist of:
  1. Appropriate taping circumstances
    1. A level of 70% on the portion of the written exam, covering basic trauma management, as presented in the AJJF Athletic Taping Manual.
  2. Basic Anatomy
    1. A level of 70% on the portion of the written exam covering the anatomy of each joint to be taped, as presented in the AJJF Athletic Taping Manual.
  3. Completion of a basic taping skills test
    1. The examinee will tape one of five joints, to be selected by the examiner.
    2. The taping application must be adequate to protect the injured joint from reinjury, and it will be inspected by the examiner.
The Taping Examination may be taken at an approved AJJF Athletic Taping Clinic.
  1. Upon successful completion of the Taping Examination at the clinic, the director signs the exam form and returns it to the candidate to be turned in with the other Blackbelt exam documentation.
  2. This taping exam is valid for one year.
