Blood Cleanup Procedure

Description

Universal Precautions for Cleanup of Blood and Body Fluids to Avoid Spread of Infectious Disease

Further Information

The AJJF offers the following guidelines on how to institute Universal Precautions in blood cleanup. Universal Precautions are desirable so that all exposures are handled the same. If someone with a blood-borne disease participates, we are already trained in the precautions. It should be noted that some people may not know they are infectious.

I. Bleach Kit

  1. Small bottle of chlorine bleach
  2. Empty 4 ounce bottle, labeled with 2 lines for measurement:
    1. Bleach (1 part bleach)
    2. Mixed (10 parts water)
  3. Latex gloves
  4. Cotton Balls
  5. Sponge
  6. Instruction sheet on outside of kit

II. Procedure for Blood or Body Fluids Cleanup

  1. Remove exposed person(s) and bleeding person to the washroom.
  2. REMOVE OBI TO AVOID BLEACH SPOTS.
  3. Uncontaminated person puts on latex gloves.
  4. Make a fresh mixture of chlorine and water - do not store mixture.
  5. Moisten cotton ball with mixture and apply to stain. The stain may not come all the way out - we are sanitizing, not just trying to remove the stain. For a larger stain, put garment in sink and pour solution over.
  6. Wet sponge with plain water and wipe off chlorine solution (or run plain water over garment).
  7. Use remainder of bleach solution mixture to wet and sanitize the dirty cotton ball, sponge and gloves.
  8. Empty the mixed solution and rinse bottle with plain water.
  9. Discard sanitized cotton ball.
  10. Sponge and gloves may be washed with soap and water and reused if properly sanitized in step #G.

III. Instructions to Avoid Blood Exposure

  1. Securely cover all areas of broken skin before starting workout.
  2. Trim all fingernails.
  3. Remove jewelry.
  4. Do not wear any article of clothing containing a blood stain.
  5. Immediately use proper cleanup procedure when any skin, clothing, or mat is exposed to blood.
  6. Do not touch the area of broken skin of any person.
