While all the martial art traditions share certain customs and practices, they each demonstrate different attitudes, philosophies, and techniques. Jujutsu is an ancient form of unarmed self-defense, as well as a systematic approach to self-development.

 

Since its essential principle JU, which means to yield or adapt under adverse circumstances, jujutsu arts depend upon balance, leverage, momentum and timing rather than strength and size. Compared to most martial arts, jujitsu has a wider range of responses in encounters with an opponent.
