DanZan Ryu Curriculum
Navigate!

DanZan Ryu Jujitsu training begins with basic stretching and strengthening exercises. Next, students learn rolls and falls that allow them to fall safely. The system is arranged into eleven lists of techniques, which teach the basics of balance, leverage and inertia. The first five lists are taught below black belt level: Yawara (basic holds and escapes), Nage No kata (basic throwing arts), Shime No Kata (grappling arts), Oku No Kata (advance combination arts), and Goshin Jitsu (self-defense arts). The remaining six lists, which are primarily taught to advanced students and black belts, include defenses against gun, knife, staff and sword; demonstration arts; iron fan and yawara stick arts; kicks; strikes and a system of resuscitation and restorative message techniques.

Tiny Tots (age 4-6 years)

This program is specifically designed to give the youngest members of your family the greatest gift of all: a terrific start in life! To paraphrase a famous poem: ALL YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW IN LIFE YOU LEARN IN KINDERGARTEN. Our Tiny Tots Program uses specialized gymnastic and tumbling tricks to develop balance, agility and body-coordination. We also seek to develop your child's self-awareness and confidence with specialized children's games and role playing activies.

Youths (7-12 years)

The purpose of the Youths Program is to challenge your children to make their bodies strong and flexible, their minds sharp and concentrated, their spirits confident and calm. Your child will learn the Jujitsu approach to self-defense. They learn the values of discipline and respect, honesty and kindness, as well as the necessity for taking responsibility for their actions. In addition to basic self-defense techniques, your child will have a great time while participating a series of exercises, relays and games designed to build fundamental reflex skills, coordination, flexibility, strength and endurance. Youth classes are designed to be great fun, yet teach useful skills and build good character.

Adult Jujitsu

Our Adult Program focuses on development of the mind, spirit and body. The fist six months of training are spent learning the basics of all martial arts: ducking, dodging, footwork, blocking, escaping and the fundamentals of the Jujitsu approach to self-defense. After completion of the basic course you will pursue the classic curriculum of DanZan Ryu (Hawaiian form) Jujitsu, which is comprised of sets of martial techniques and strategies, each actually a separate form of Jujitsu, arranged in progressive steps. The first developmental level is the foundation for the next stage of development. Rank is earned as you master each group of arts, until a Black Belt is achieved. Along with these effective self-defense skills you will learn the philosophy of the "yielding" approach to help you deal with situations in your daily life. From the rare threatening confrontation to simple anger and aggression. You will learn that you do not need to defend your honor with irrational violence, nor permit yourself to be victimized.
